Blame Teachers: The Emotional Reasons for Educational Reform (Studies in the Philosophy of Education), by Steven P. Jones

A volume in Studies in the Philosophy of Education Series Editor: John E. Petrovic, The University of Alabama There is a story going around about the public schools and the people who teach in them- a story about how awful our nation's teachers are and why we should blame teachers for the poor state of our public schools. But is the story about teachers right or fair? Why do so many people point fingers at teachers and seem to resent them so much? Blame Teachers: The Emotional Reasons for Educational Reform examines why many people blame teachers for what they understand to be the poor state of our schools. Blame comes easily to many people when they read about poor student performance and how "protected" teachers are by teachers' unions and tenure policies. And with blame comes resentment, and with resentment comes demands for all kinds of educational reform-calls for more standardized testing, merit pay, charter schools, and all the rest. And we expect teachers to like and accept all the reforms being proposed. Conceiving educational reform out of blame and resentment aimed at teachers does no good for teachers, students, or schools. Blame Teachers outlines many of the strange and unacceptable assumptions about teaching and the purposes of education contained in these educational reforms. Intended for teachers, teacher education students, policymakers and the larger public, Blame Teachers suggests much better and more productive conversations we can have with teachers-conversations much more likely to improve teaching and learning in classrooms. The book argues for conversations with teachers that don't begin or end with blame and resentment.

A wonderfully well-written, poignant book discussing the current issues with education reform, the tendency of reformers to blame teachers, the harm this does to all involved, and accessible solutions. Easy enough for anyone invested in education to read without oversimplifying the issues. Worth every penny!

Getting things done right 99 per cent of the time is the best anyone can do--right? A 1 per cent defect rate means: 20,000 articles of mail lost every hour; 5,000 botched surgeries per week; four or more accidents per day at major airports; 200,000 incorrectly dispensed drug prescriptions each year. Still think 99 per cent is good enough? The Power of Six Sigma will help everyone in the organization understand what Six Sigma is, how it can benefit your company, and most of all, how it can benefit you--as an employee of an organization implementing or thinking about implementing Six Sigma. The Power of Six Sigma is unlike any other book on Six Sigma. This fictionalized tale simplifies a complicated topic and, through dialogue between Joe and Larry, explains the way Six Sigma works in a nonthreatening, easy-to-understand way. Everyone in the organization will learn what Six Sigma is and how it works.

From Publishers Weekly
Using a format similar to that in Spenser Johnson's Who Moved My Cheese?, Chowdhury (Management 21C) has created a fictional story that exemplifies the benefits of the business philosophy called Six Sigma. In Chowdhury's rendering, Joe, a middle-aged manager unexpectedly laid off from his position at a fast-food franchise company, is depressed and uncertain about his next move. He calls Larry, an old friend and former co-worker whose career is thriving. Over lunch, Larry explains how he has practiced Six Sigma, both to advance his career and to increase profits for his employer, and he teaches the program's basics to an initially skeptical, then wildly enthusiastic Joe. At the crux of this strategic program, advanced by GE's Jack Welch and instituted at many other major corporations, is a renewed focus on eliminating mistakes, waste and rework. Six Sigma is based on designated teams ("people power") that focus solely on solving a specific problem ("process power"), which may lead to efficiencies that please consumers and, by saving the company money, enhance the bottom line. What distinguishes Six Sigma from other popular quality management techniques, such as Total Quality Management and ISO9000, is that each team has a clear goal; moreover, employees benefit because companies usually tie a financial incentive to a team's goal. While Chowdhury's is not the first book about Six Sigma, what makes his stand out is its engaging and simple approach intended for a broad audience, from the assembly line worker to middle managers and CEOs of smaller companies. (Apr.)Forecast: Given the attention paid to Six Sigma, and Dearborn's ambitious 50,000-copy announced first printing, this book has a reasonable chance of hitting business bestseller lists if Dearborn can jump-start word-of-mouth and find ways to encourage managers to make the book required reading for employees.

This book is still one of the best books out there (even though it has been around for a long time) to really ease a person, a novice, into beginning to feel comfortable about getting into the wonderful world of 'Applied Six Sigma', without being intimidated about the math.

Simple intro to a complex subject
By Khaled Mahmoud Al Anani
This book is a valuable reference to those trying to understand the subject of six sigma. It is definitely not meant to be an all-encompassing reference on the subject, yet it is an important primer (yes, PRIMER) for those who wanto to understand six sigma. Many people immediately skip to the intricate details of six sigma without understanding what is ultimately the PURPOSE of six sigma, and hence fail to fully understand the subject.
The book is written in the first person story form about a man trying to understand from his colleague what six sigma is, how it is implemented, and who are the major players. At the beginning the terminology might be slightly confusing, but it becomes clearer towards the end as the author provides some helpful examples. As I said, will not make you an expert on the complexities of six sigma, but it will provide a useful introduction and will clear many misconceptions that you might have about the subject. The book is brief (shouldnt take anyone more than 3 days to read), well written in simple and logical order.

I couldn't put it down.
By Sandra Brown Rarey
I read it in one sitting. It was a suspenseful and creepy story about a woman's worst fears and nightmares coming true when she is caught up in a twisted family. Anna has more fears than most folks, but she certainly has more presence of mind and grit than I would in her circumstances. The author's writing has elements of twilight Zone and Stephen King. I'll read all of her books.

I love creepy, twisted plots like this. It has the stomach clenching fright of the Hannibal Lector stories. Highly recommend this book. I've read and enjoyed several others Charlene Iverson books. What an imagination!

Suspense thriller with a horrific twist!
By P.S. Winn
Good story with a few twists and turns. Anna Bennett is a nurse. Working nights at the hospital, Anna is nervous about strange things that happen, but her precautions aren't enough and Anna is going to find herself caught up in the strangest situation she can imagine. The author does a great job with this mystery suspense with a touch of twisted horror. I love her writing style and will be looking into more titles by an author that deserves to have readers checking into her works.

A History of the Modern Middle East: Rulers, Rebels, and Rogues, by Betty Anderson

A History of the Modern Middle East offers a comprehensive assessment of the region, stretching from the fourteenth century and the founding of the Ottoman and Safavid empires through to the present-day protests and upheavals. The textbook focuses on Turkey, Iran, and the Arab countries of the Middle East, as well as areas often left out of Middle East history—such as the Balkans and the changing roles that Western forces have played in the region for centuries—to discuss the larger contexts and influences on the region's cultural and political development. Enriched by the perspectives of workers and professionals; urban merchants and provincial notables; slaves, students, women, and peasants, as well as political leaders, the book maps the complex social interrelationships and provides a pivotal understanding of the shifting shapes of governance and trajectories of social change in the Middle East.

Extensively illustrated with drawings, photographs, and maps, this text skillfully integrates a diverse range of actors and influences to construct a narrative that is at once sophisticated and lucid. A History of the Modern Middle East highlights the region's complexity and variation, countering easy assumptions about the Middle East, those who governed, and those they governed—the rulers, rebels, and rogues who shaped a region.

Review
"This fascinating history of the modern Middle East reveals the complexities of the region, connecting past with present through a novel pedagogical approach. Betty Anderson has written the most sophisticated textbook I've read on the region, one that will quickly join the ranks of classic works in the field."—Bedross Der Matossian, University of Nebraska-Lincoln

"Betty Anderson's A History of the Modern Middle East draws on a new generation of scholarship to offer a social history of the Middle East that incorporates voices 'from below.' Tracing recurring patterns of power struggles since the early Ottoman era, Anderson also contextualizes the recent phase of uprisings within a deep history of political activism and rebellion and counters popular myths about political and cultural stasis in the Middle East."—Waleed Hazbun, Director of the Center for Arab and Middle Eastern Studies, American University of Beirut

"In her deft analysis of the constantly changing region we call the 'Middle East,' Betty Anderson argues for the prominent role played by previously marginalized actors such as students, women, workers, and peasants in making the modern Middle East. This book represents a refreshing new approach that expands categories of analysis and is a valuable contribution to the field of Middle East Studies."—Ellen Fleischmann, University of Dayton

"Many of the available introductory histories of the modern Middle East overemphasize the role of European powers and the top down authoritarian nature of the state. Betty Anderson's pathbreaking and multilayered account focuses on coalitions and networks and shows how groups can at once be subnational and transnational, creating an account of foreign intervention that does not rob the region's people of agency. An essential book for any instructor, scholar, or student of Middle East history, politics, society, and culture."—Noora Lori, Boston University

"In this thoughtfully researched and clearly written book, Betty Anderson deftly weaves an intricate narrative of the modern history of the Middle East. Delving into the intimacies of shifting political dynamics and social transformations, Anderson perceives the region within transnational frameworks as well as against locally specific contexts. This book can easily serve as a central text in both undergraduate and graduate courses."—Nadya Sbaiti, American University of Beirut
"[The author] succeeds in producing a book that can serve as a university-level textbook or a source of information for anyone interested in knowing the background for breaking news...Excellent maps, photos and boxes defining pivotal groups, places, phenomena and events, from Sufism, Janissaries and the Mamluks to the Alawi, Jerusalem and Hamas, supplement and enrich the text...The emphasis is not on single events but on the interaction between the governors and the governed over time — the stuff of which history is made. " —Sally Bland, The Jordan Times

Review of Peanut Butter Principles by Eric Franklin
By Elizabeth
"Peanut Butter Principles" by Eric Franklin is a very insightful and encouraging book. Mr. Franklin touches on some very good points on how to encourage children and others to reach their full potential. In Chapter 16, Mr. Franklin brings up his faith and points out something I, myself have learned, that, like the title of the chapter, "Faith Makes all Things Possible Not Easy", is very true. As the author points out, our journey to reach our full potential and to make our lives a success is not easy, but with hard work and perseverence it is possible. Mr. Franklin speaks about how to build up the child's self esteem when helping them. He mentions that they should think for themselves as opposed to giving the child the answers or completing a task for them. Mr. Franklin tells us the importance of persevering in our endeavors and not giving up so easily.

I agree with "Peanut Butter Principles" by Mr. Eric Franklin. Thank you sir, for a very enlightening book, which I, myself can take into account for my own life. I highly recommend "Peanut Butter Principles" by Eric Franklin for anyone, not just parents, teachers or mentors. It has some very excellent guidelines anyone can put to use in their lives. "Peanut Butter Principles" by Eric Franklin is most definitely 'my cup of tea'!!!

Very practical and insightful!
By Jeannette R Fitzwater
I just read this book after sending my last child out of the nest. I only wish I could have read it years ago...it would be a great motivator during those tough years. In thinking about my three kids, these are the three princlples that I have seen play out for them:

#10 The difference between a goal and a dream is a deadline.
#12 Talent and intellect does always add up to success. Perseverance does.
#20 Don't worry about what you don't know. Do what you know.

Thanks for "putting your thoughts to paper"

Timeless principles your grandparents taught your parents
By Dennis Mitton
Eric Franklin has written a truly useful book for instilling success oriented character traits in your children through 47 Leadership Lessons. In the preface he writes that he grew up 'solidly middle class' and it shows in his lessons. There's nothing here about attachment theory or evolutionary psychology. Instead he has chapters titled Life Is Not Fair. Get Over It, and Your Life Is Not a Rehearsal. My favorite is Everything Happens For A Reason, But Sometimes The Reason Is You're Stupid And You Make Poor Decisions. In five sections he walks readers through principles about self, talent, life lessons, relationships, and good choices. The text is breezy and to the point and Franklin draws widely from his own experiences.

Your grandparents probably took most of these lessons as self evident. You and your parents a little less so. Much of this will be entirely foreign to your children. But just like the new economy and new math we continue to learn that there is nothing new and that there are no short cuts to success and good character. Franklin gives an excellent path for parents and their children.

Hopefully parents will read it to each other as well.
