Decent Textbook, but Could be Better

This textbook was mandatory for me to buy for my Data Structures course in college. This is an okay textbook. It is a decent secondary source as long as your professor is good at teaching, luckily for me, that is the case.
A lot of the examples that are given to explain certain data structures are long winded and do not help at all. They are generally over complicated and are hard to understand. Also they also seem to contradict a lot of the common and more popular uses of java at times, which can be frustrating. My last gripe with this textbook is that it just decides to almost completely disregard Iterators, which are quite important to understand.

The definitions are pretty solid, however, and so this book is a solid secondary source. It will help partially confused on a topic, but it is hard to fully grasp a topic just from this textbook, in my opinion. I would recommend professors to try to find a better alternative to this one.

Not good for learning it yourself

Forced to buy this book for a data structures in Java class.

This textbook is far too wordy for its own good. Author tries to be witty by explaining something incorrectly for a page and then stating "Oops, I lied, this is actually how its done:"

When I am trying to learn something I don't want to be given confusing explanations. Chapters have long winded walls of text that never seem to cut to the point - rarely is anything put into simple terms.

The assignments inside the book are not too great either - they tend to have vague directions and without instructor clarification it is very difficult to work with this book unless you are already well versed with the author's specific implementations of the data structures covered. The directions are vague enough that you will end up writing code that has already been provided by the author.

For such an expensive textbook, it leaves a lot to be desired.

For the second year student.

The first thing that a computer science student studies is usually a programming language that becomes the foundation for future studies. Most of the programming exercises he works on are chosen to illustrate programming techniques. The book presumes that the student knows at least the basic principles of the Java language. In learning the language the student has written several programs. But he has not begun to approach real world problems that usually involve the processing of some kind of data. The main theme of the book is to familiarize the student with the techniques and procedures that have been developed to ease the processing of different types of data.

There were some complaints about errors found in the first edition. While this is regrettable, it is almost impossible to produce a book of 800+ pages without some errors creeping through the editing process. Most of the errors have been fixed. But there are still a few, one that I found more amusing rather than serious was in the address of the website dedicated to the book. It's a com domain, and the com is left off of the given address. Oh well, I certainly couldn't write a program 800 pages long that would be completely bug free.

Robbins argues that by using a new technique called neurolinguistic programming (NLP) anyone can become successful at almost anything. NLP teaches us how to communicate success to ourselves. One of the best ways to do this is to model ourselves on people who are successful: Think, act, and speak like a success and you are on the way to being one. Despite much helpful material (even regarding nutrition), this book scarcely acknowledges the limitations that exist in people's lives. Of course, the whole thrust of NLP is to learn to focus on one's power and not on one's limits. But the text is too wordyit reads like a transcript of a series of talksand it also needs more structure and organization. I don't know about all the stuff in this book. Does it change your life? I don't know. What I do know is that I fee like Tony's looking over my shoulder pushing me to do what I already know I need to do. Just today I was reading the book and had to put it down to make some important phone calls that I'd been putting off. I know what I need to do to be successful, I think everyone does, but it is just taking those steps, repeating behaviors that lead you in the right direction.

What a Shame

Darn shame, I read the good doctor's op-ed in the Los Angeles Times on early American gun laws and thought I would like to learn more. But of course at these prices I shall give it a pass. Write a book, charge a lot, make the students buy the book. Like I said, a darn shame.

About the Author
Frank K. Reilly, a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA), is the Bernard J. Hank Professor of Finance, Mendoza College of Business, University of Notre Dame, where he served as dean from 1981-1987. Prior to 1981, Dr. Reilly was a professor at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, the University of Wyoming, and the University of Kansas. Recently, he was part of the inaugural group selected as a fellow of the Financial Management Association International. At the 2001 AIMR annual meeting in Los Angeles, he received the Daniel J. Forrestal III Leadership Award for Professional Ethics and Standards of Investment Practice. Among his other honors, Professor Reilly was included in the list of Outstanding Educators in America, received the Alumni Excellence in Graduate Teaching Award and the Outstanding Educator Award from the M.B.A. class at the University of Illinois, the Outstanding Teachers Award from the M.B.A. class at the University of Notre Dame, and the Faculty Award from the University of Notre Dame. He received his B.B.A. at the University of Notre Dame, his M.B.A. at Northwestern University, and his Ph.D. at the University of Chicago.

Keith C. Brown, a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA), is the Jack S. Josey Professor, University Distinguished Teaching Professor, and Fayez Sarofim Fellow at the McCombs School of Business at the University of Texas at Austin, where he teaches Investments, Portfolio Management and Security Analysis, Capital Markets, and Derivatives courses at the BBA and MBA levels. He is president and CEO of The MBA Investment Fund, LLC, a private capital appreciation fund managed by UT graduate students, and the former director of the department's Hicks, Muse, Tate & Furst Center for Private Equity Finance. Professor Brown is cofounder and senior partner of Fulcrum Financial Group, a portfolio management and investment advisory firm located in Austin, Texas, and Las Vegas, Nevada. He serves as an advisor to the boards of the Teacher Retirement System of Texas and the University of Texas Investment Management Company. He is an associate editor for the JOURNAL OF INVESTMENT MANAGEMENT and the JOURNAL OF BEHAVIORAL FINANCE. He received his B.A. from San Diego State University and his M.S. and Ph.D. from Purdue University.

Index is busted. Off by about 100 pages. Other than that the book is super so far. Only a few chapters into it. Highly recommended for anyone working for a mutual fund or investment bank. Explains a LOT. Can't wait to finish it. (I have "9th Edition" which has the same cover image as the one I am reviewing).

About the Author
Keith Ord is Sebes Fellow and Professor in the Operations and Information Management group at the McDonough School of Business at Georgetown University. He completed his graduate work at the University of London and held faculty positions at the Universities of Bristol and Warwick before moving to The Pennsylvania State University in 1980 and then to Georgetown University in 1999. His research interests include time series and forecasting, spatial modeling and the statistical modeling of business processes. He is a co-author of the 2008 research monograph FORECASTING WITH EXPONENTIAL SMOOTHING: THE STATE SPACE APPROACH and also co-authored Kendall's ADVANCED THEORY OF STATISTICS. He has served as an editor of the INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF FORECASTING and is currently an associate editor, as well as being on the editorial boards of several other journals. Keith is a Fellow of the American Statistical Association and of the International Institute of Forecasters.

Robert Fildes is Distinguished Professor of Management Science in the School of Management, Lancaster University and Director of the Lancaster Centre for Forecasting. He has a mathematics degree from Oxford and a Ph.D. from the University of California in Statistics. He was co-founder in 1981 of the JOURNAL OF FORECASTING and in 1985 of the INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF FORECASTING. For ten years from 1988 he was Editor-in-Chief of the IJF and remains an associate editor. He was president of the International Institute of Forecasters between 2000 and 2004. His research interests are concerned with the comparative evaluation of different forecasting methods, the implementation of improved forecasting procedures in organizations and the design of forecasting systems. In 1976 he wrote one of the earliest business forecasting textbooks. Though long out-of-print, many of its core ideas have survived the test of time. Robert is a Fellow of the International Institute of Forecasters and of the Operational Research Society.

A coworker once told me this personal anecdote about sitting on a bench at a zoo in front of the lion enclosure… A couple walked by with a little girl. The little girl pointed and cried in terror, “Ooo! Look at the lions!” Her parents replied, “Yes, the lions are scary, aren’t they?” A little later, a couple walked by with a little boy. The little boy pointed and cried in terror, “Ooo! Look at the lions!” His parents replied, “But we’re not afraid, are we?”

Emer O’Toole’s book Girls Will Be Girls: Dressing Up, Playing Parts and Daring to Act Differently sides with the notion that our gender identities are social constructs: we learn to rehearse and perform our gender roles. And performing is the operative theme. Chapter titles refer to performances: Rehearsing, Playing Dress-up, Out of Costume, Role Play, etc. (And Dr. O’Toole teaches Irish performance studies at Concordia University.)

In this philosophical/sociological treatise, the author analyzes the conflict and interaction between agency (one’s choices) and structure (society). She illustrates the conflict with stories from her life—her progression from a young girl committed to femininity to a young woman questioning her gender role performances—the reasons for them and their utility in the quest for happiness. One chapter describes her Halloween costumes over several years, presenting them in retrospect as experiments in gendered performances. In another chapter, she describes the relevant significance of some of her own sexual experiences. She presents herself on two occasions conversing with Aristotle, who has said that happiness is the only thing one can desire for its own sake. She points out to him that happiness can only be achieved if you can create a self that goes beyond the boundaries of the structure created by our society.

In describing her performances in real life fashioning a persona who goes beyond custom and bravely encouraging us all to do it, Emer O’Toole is a philosopher, an activist, and an artist who is herself a performer—and in that sense she seems to me the greatest thing since Frida Kahlo—in the sense that Frida Kahlo’s oeuvre, like Emer O’Toole’s, included her lifestyle, her activism, and her persona. Girls Will Be Girls is delightful to read, courageous, seriously unique, and beyond edifying: it is inspirational.

About the Author

Jeff Augen, currently a private investor and writer, has spent more than a decade building a unique intellectual property portfolio of databases, algorithms, and associated software for technical analysis of derivatives prices. His work, which includes more than a million lines of computer code, is particularly focused on the identification of subtle anomalies and price distortions.

Augen has a 25-year history in information technology. As a cofounding executive of IBM’s Life Sciences Computing business, he defined a growth strategy that resulted in $1.2 billion of new revenue and managed a large portfolio of venture capital investments. From 2002 to 2005, Augen was President and CEO of TurboWorx Inc., a technical computing software company founded by the chairman of the Department of Computer Science at Yale University. His books include Trading Options at Expiration, The Option Trader’s Workbook, and The Volatility Edge in Options Trading.

Dense and intense material for the (really) experienced trader

Undeniably, this is the most densest book in a series of books by Augen that includes Trading Options at Expiration: Strategies and Models for Winning the Endgameand The Volatility Edge in Options Trading: New Technical Strategies for Investing in Unstable Markets and a workbook. This book is also perhaps the most targeted one and is unlikely to appeal to a broader audience.

The book in itself is fairly short (written with the gravity similar to academic journals) and has five chapters. The first chapter, though called "basic concepts" really sets the tone for the book and makes it evident that the intended audience is experienced day traders (true to the book title's implication). The chapter provides a very informed analysis of how options market (pricing) has changed in the recent crises, with specific focus on implied volatility swings and volatility skews across strike prices. The second chapter discusses automated trading and emerging trends in that field. Unless the reader uses sophisticated trading systems and is very familiar with programmed trading, the chapter is not likely to sustain significant interest, but the reader is well-advised to force yourself through the chapter. Using various detailed examples, Augen demonstrates the role of statistical analyses in trend exploitation, issues of "over fitting" indicators and volatility distortions. The third chapter (forming bulk of the book) deals with volatility distortions and how to trade them. The discussion is however based on 3-dimensional maps (implied volatility, calendar information and price) and is not really clear how accessible such tools are. Using various examples, Augen demonstrates approaches involving selling time decay and backspreads. The fourth chapter introduces a new charting tool with the premise that the principal goal of an option trader is to "arbitrage differences between implied and fair volatilities". Accessibility of the tools required and even suitability of these methods for the most aggressive casual trader (once whose primary job is not trading) is not clear here either. In the last chapter (perhaps, a neat set up for the next book?) Augen discusses special events focusing on only two - long weekends and associated price distortions and events surrounding markets "digesting" large amounts of news.

Overall, the book does absolute justice to its title - it is indeed targeting distortions for "very brief" (read minutes, mostly) and is fairly dense even for the experienced option trader. After having read all the books from the author in this field, the book on trading options near expiration was a far useful one for a broader audience in at least highlighting significant mechanics associated with expiration pricing dynamics and potential trade constructs. This book, Augen's dedicated focus on day trading, doesn't even pretend to be suitable for anyone but a niche audience. Augen does provide some interesting insights that will benefit any serious options trader, but this time, the book is perhaps a little too far out except for the very experienced and fanatic fans of Augen.

Two key sections

I manage a hedge fund that trades equity and index options. Augen's books are required reading for all our traders. The current book is by far the best. The most important sections for us have been the discussion about calculating volatility in different time frames and the detailed trend analysis using minute-by-minute price changes expressed in standard deviations.

Following the approach outlined in this book, we now calculate a stock's overnight, intraday, and close-to-close volatility. Comparing these values allows us to identify stocks that have large overnight risk or stocks whose options are underpriced during the trading session. We use this information exactly the way the book describes along with our own knowledge to structure trades that are statistically advantaged.

The trend analysis using minute-by-minute price spikes calculated in standard deviations is equally valuable. This approach has dramatically improved our day trading capability. We've been building on the idea using other indicators and time frames longer than 1 minute.

The book is a fine piece of academic quality work. It's far superior to the more common "get rich quick" style investment books that have little value for serious investors. But it's not for beginners. Like the other books in the series, it was written for serious option traders.

It does have some good nuggets

I just finished reading Augen's latest book on options trading, and I would say it is worth a read. I can't give it 5 stars because it really doesn't give that much direction on entry and exit requirements. This is slightly disappointing. An unnecessary amount of pages are devoted to showing that the market is random, so you can't predict it. This book does detail how to use volatility to possibly spot changes trading patterns. It also details how to find possible volatility distortions. It is up to the reader to implement these methods with his/her own programming and back testing. Back testing will be crucial to implementing the strategies outlined in this book because there really isn't that much guidance on when to enter and exit trades trying to capture volatility distortions. You will have to build your own rules after back testing.

Overall, this book isn't overpriced for what you get, so I'd recommend it to anyone who has a good grasp with programming.
