Pregnant screenwriter Cora has taken to writing lengthy letters to her unborn child, and it's small wonder why. For that age-old script family values is looking like it needs a complete rewrite.

From Publishers Weekly
Fisher ( Surrender the Pink ) is up to her usual schtick: analyzing the dynamics of a love affair gone sour. It all works fairly well, as long as the narrator, pregnant Hollywood script rewriter Cora Sharpe, doesn't get carried away with her own clever quips. Mildly concerned that she won't survive labor, Cora is writing to her unborn child. Between these piquant scribblings, the narrative backtracks to events leading up to Cora's pregnancy, including a pivotal phase in the relationship with her ex-boyfriend Ray, the expectant father . When a friend with AIDS moves in with them, Cora's efforts to ease his final days demonstrate to Ray that he is not her top priority. Exit Ray, and enter some wacky and not-so-convincing plot twists focused on Cora's flamboyant mother ("To label her eccentric would be a disservice to the words," Cora remarks). Scenarios built around this show-bizzy grandma-to-be, whose "heartfelt delusions" give the book its title, lack the conviction of earlier chapters. Still, Fisher's nonstop pithy dialogue and opinionated heroine make this a lively, witty read.

From Library Journal
With tongue in cheek, Fisher delivers another of her seriocomic novels ( Postcards from the Edge, LJ 8/87; Surrender the Pink, LJ 7/90) that seem to mirror her various lives: Hollywood brat, actress, screenwriter. Add mother to the mix, and you have her latest plot, about a screenwriter whose love affair coincides with a friend's dying of AIDS and who finds herself pregnant after the affair ends. The narrative combines letters (not too many) to her unborn daughter (she is convinced she is having a girl) with introspective monologs and dialogues with friends. (As Cora/Carrie notes, she has her friends, her talking, and her work--where is there room for a man?) The novel is full of the throwaway one-liners for which Fisher is known, both in her films and her writing, and perhaps that's the problem with it: it is ultimately a book one can read and forget as quickly as a one-liner. Only for fans. Previewed in Prepub Alert, LJ 7/1/93.
- Francine Fialkoff, "Library Journal"
Copyright 1994 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Kirkus Reviews
Again mining Hollywood humor, actress/novelist/screenwriter Fisher's third novel--following Postcards from the Edge (plus screenplay) and Surrender the Pink--finds her still relying on smart talk over plot. Any reader who has read all three installments of Princess Leia's wars against addiction, tinsel values, and bossy mothers will beg her to focus hereafter less on emotional hairsplitting and more on story. The first two-thirds of Delusions of Grandma are not about Grandma, but about screenwriter Cora Sharpe's affair with Ray Beaudrilleaux, a somewhat younger Hollywood lawyer. She feels ``ill-suited to the mystery of being in a relationship'' and silly when they go out together; she'd rather not go out, but young Ray, so softspoken and compassionate, is a social hippety-hop. Most of the text covers their early romance and then eases into their breaking off--although Cora is pregnant. It's all talk, with enough wacky brilliance thrown in so that a screenplay is salvageable, perhaps with cameos for famous folk and Fisher friends like, say, Meryl Streep. When not doctoring, writing, or rewriting scripts with gay fellow scriptwriter Bud (whose flippance steals his every scene), Cora lives on the phone with her committee of close friends who tolerate her continuous self-analysis. Near the book's end, her mom Viv, a kooky retired costume designer, decides to abduct her aged father from a nursing home--he's suffering from Alzheimer's disease--and take him to his childhood home in Whitewright, Texas. And so pregnant Cora, Bud, and Viv entrain with Grandpa, who's out of it but comes up with some moving moments. The climax fades from the page, and the not very funny letters Cora writes to her unborn child move the story nowhere. Even admirers of Fisher's many skills will find this as vaporous as an HBO movie you wish you'd never watched. -- Copyright 1994, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.

Laugh Out Loud Funny

Definitely read this with a friend in the room. (One who doesn't mind being interrupted while you read aloud from every other page.)
This book is full of the type of wit that I wish I possessed.
Not for people who like a very straight-foward plot. It is a bit overpowered by the prose, but with prose like this who cares? I reached the end and immediately wanted to either start over or invite Fisher to lunch.
Fisher has scored another hit.

Carrie, you can do better!
By Lubug
I really like Carrie Fisher. She grew up in the highly artificial environment of Hollywood with famous parents and yet has a compelling down-to-earthness that I admire. In interviews, she sounds like a very bright woman full of self-deprecating wit. Both "Surrender the Pink" and "Postcards from the Edge" sounded a lot like Ms. Fisher herself, to good effect. Yes, her characters don't live like the rest of us. In fact, most of us probably wouldn't want to live their lives, even if those lives are easier in material ways.

So, I'm convinced she was having a bad week or month when she wrote "Delusions of Grandma." Instead of the madcap, witty work of her other books, this one tries too hard. Ray, the protagonist's boyfriend, hangs around waiting for her to become less self-indulgent and self-obsessed and finally gives up. We feel for him, probably more than for her. She knows she is self-obsessed but can't seem to stop herself. Almost anyone has a habit they can't seem to break -- eating, alcohol, etc., etc.-- but when the habit is ALWAYS considering yourself and your whims first, it's really hard for other folks to have sympathy.

I love Ms. Fisher's other books. I think she has now thoroughly mined her own life for material. Maybe she could hire a research assistant to bring her information about something else, so she could apply her formidable wit to a fresh situation?

intriguing characters but so self-indulgent
By Shlomit
I found myself skimming this book for the good bits - the ones that are witty or where things actually happen. But about two thirds of it are just tedious wallowing in intelligent but pointless musings. Some fierce editing would have made it an enjoyable book.

Badly Written, Poorly Thought Out
By Helga Devlin
If I can prevent anyone from wasting time and money on this book, I will be pleased. It is written on the level of a bad high school newspaper. Moreover, although it is a coffee table book, clearly intended for English speaking readers who are not familiar with Indian cinema, it is not organized to translate the Indian film titles into English, and it rattles off those incomprehensible names without ever describing what the film is about. IT IS NOT WRITTEN BY ISMAIL MERCHANT! He wrote the foreward; and I don't know why he did that.

Must have for any Mentalist, Hypnotist and Illusionist!
By Joel Lopez
From amazon.co.uk review by Mads Storm Andersen:

Sleight of Mind was a turning point for me. It was the first book that captured the essence of the actual use (not theory in ideal-world situations) of suggestion and NLP. It also gave me a handle on how to develop my performances, and got me thinking clearly for the first time about my performance persona and what impact it had on my audiences. The NLP tips and tricks are incredibly useful, and the hypnotic induction advice is excellent.

It's a good, broad title that gets you thinking about who you come across as in real life too, and exactly why you get on with some people and not with others. Reading it there'll be times when you'll want to kick yourself for somewhere in the back of your mind already knowing some of its advice, and yet not acting on it. I read it once every few months just to remind myself how important what it says is.

This is a book that has severely got up the noses of NLP'ers and 'regression therapists' for coming clean about some aspects of NLP and Hypnosis. I'm glad to say that this is real life, usable stuff, not the hyped up bilge that most books on the subjects offer. This is the basics, the good stuff that everyone needs to know first if they're going to explore these things in any way, and I've got no hesitation recommending it.

I enjoyed 'Geist' by the same authors, both are good reads and extremely useful to those interested in or performing Mentalism or Hypnosis.

From amazon.co.uk review by Thomas L. Petersen:

This is a pretty near faultless book for anyone interested in suggestion and its use in 'mentalism' (psychological magical effects). It's packed with bits of useful information about human behaviour, especially your own, which as others have said here are just as useful for non-performers as performers. A warning though, the people-watching this promotes is very, very addictive, and it will have you think twice about every movement and facial expression you and everybody else makes! If I'd read this at the very start of my forays into hypnosis and NLP I could have saved myself a small fortune on other books. Though it was continually recommended to me by performing members of the magic fraternity, I have to admit that I was very skeptical of their take on it because of the words 'mind control' in the title, but I quickly became a convert after reading it. Despite the name, nothing could be less hyped or more down to earth.

What I've never quite understood is how Derren Brown can bring out his book 'Tricks of the Mind' a couple of years after Sleight of Mind and use so much of the latter's material? Take out three hundred or so pretty superfluous pages out of Derren Brown's 'Tricks of the Mind' and you have a lesser version of 'Sleight of Mind' - something I wished I'd known before forking out for Brown's title.

EVERY mentalist should have this and Banacheck's books on their 'must buy' list. Forget the useless double-talk in Knepper's 'Wonder Words', this is the real deal and should not be missed.

***

From amazon.co.uk review by Mr. M. R. Carney:

Primarily designed for an audience of working performers, the book covers the idea of the use of NLP and Hypnosis techniques in actual, real life performance. The book covers the basics of the psychological techniques, through to the more advanced techniques that can actually be used to enhance your performance of magic and mentalism, and even to create unique and powerful effects and experiences for your audience.

The book is very well written, in no-nonsense language, cutting out the rubbish found in so many NLP/Hypnosis/Hypnotic language books. Stripping out the evangelical, self-selling, self-help rubbish makes this a concise (only 161 pages), easily readable volume on the real work behind powerful performance - this isn't just an NLP model, but an actual explanation of the psychological quirks, mechanisms and techniques used by those who give their audiences only the best.

Don't buy this book unless you are prepared to elevate your perfomance up a few levels!

English novelist and playwright Wilkie Collins was a prolific writer with a body of work comprising thirty novels, over sixty short stories, more than a dozen plays, and a wide range of non-fiction pieces. Collins is best known for his novels The Woman in White, an early sensation novela genre combining shocking gothic horror with everyday domestic settingsand The Moonstone, which is credited as one of the first modern mystery novels. In the 1850s Collins met Charles Dickens and the two struck up a friendship, which lead to Collins becoming a frequent contributor to Dickens s journals Household Words and All the Year Round. Many of his stories have been adapted for film, including Basil, A Terribly Strange Bed, The Moonstone and The Woman in White. Collins died in 1889 at the age of 65.

Charming Predecessor to _The Woman in White_.
By Lauryn Angel
This is the last of what critics refer to as Collins's "apprentice novels", meaning that this is the last novel he wrote before he achieved fame with _The Woman in White_. Many of the themes Collins used in _The Woman in White_ seem to have been tested here, most notably the question of the identity of a mysterious woman, but the themes of legitimacy and secrecy play important parts as well. Collins also has a non-British character with a prominent part in this novel, but the German Uncle Joseph is as endearing as the Italian Count Fosco is sinister. Andrew Treverton and his servant, Shrowl, provide comic relief in a manner similar to Frederick Fairlie -- they exhibit the type of antisocial behavior that is irritating in real life, but is somehow rendered amusing in print.
Unlike _The Woman in White_ or _The Moonstone_, there are no real villains in this novel. There are no intrigues to gain fortunes. There is, however, a ghost. Or is there? The mystery of this novel is of the commonplace variety; it is a question of a domestic secret rather than that of a stolen Indian diamond or a woman's sanity. Despite all of this, the novel is still a page turner. Even after the story became a bit predictable, I couldn't put the book down until I knew for sure what happened to Rosamond Frankland and Sarah Leeson.
As usual, Collins has assembled an interesting bunch of characters: the sea captain, the actress, the misanthrope, the mysterious maid, and the young married couple. I found Sarah Leeson to be at once the most interesting and the most sympathetic character. This woman has obviously had a tragic past, a past which torments her, and it is only at the novel's close that Collins reveals what happened to destroy her happiness.
All-in-all, this is a charming, fast-paced read that would be perfect for a lazy Saturday afternoon.

early Collins work shows promise..
By lazza
Wilkie Collins has written some brilliant crime/mystery novels during his career, most notably The Woman in White / No Name / The Moonstone. His earlier works are almost unknown nowadays. But such obscurity is unwarrented, at least in the case of The Dead Secret.
The Dead Secret tells a simple story of a mystery surrounding an untold secret of a dying wealthy woman. This woman's secret is shared only with her servant. Despite the woman's dying wish, the servant does not divulge the secret ... with unpleasent results. Eventually the secret is revealed and all is understood.
The novel works well mostly because it is fast paced, and it has all the richness of a Collins novel (ie, it is well-written). No, it isn't as clever or suspenseful as Collins's later works. But Wilkie Collins fans should place The Dead Secret on their 'must read' list.

An appetizer for further greatness to come!
By Paul Weiss
Mrs Treverton, who is not expected to live through the night, summons her lady's maid, Sarah Leeson, to her side. Their hushed conversation reveals that, many years ago, Sarah and Mrs Treverton conspired together to cover up a devastating family secret. With her death fast approaching, Mrs Treverton demands the expiation of that guilt and attempts to force Sarah to reveal the details of the secret to her husband by giving him the hand-written confession which they prepare and sign together that night. While the timid, brow-beaten Sarah is unable to muster the mental courage to destroy the note, she somehow pulls her thoughts together and finds the strength to hide the note in a long abandoned room in Porthgenna mansion in order to keep the secret hidden from her master. When she sees the stricken Captain Treverton weeping, mourning his wife's death by hugging their infant daughter, Rosamond, and asking the baby for her comfort in dealing with his grief, Sarah realizes that the hypocrisy necessary to stay at Porthgenna mansion while the note was hidden there is beyond her and she flees into the night!

The story resumes some fifteen years later as an adult Rosamond, newly married to her loving squire, Leonard Frankland, inherits Porthgenna mansion and they make plans to implement a program of renovations which will restore the estate to its former glory. A series of coincidences result in Sarah encountering Rosamond and coming to the horrifying realization that the secret is in imminent danger of being brought to light! At that point, the messy stuff hits the fan and the balance of this wonderful classic novel is spent unearthing the sordid details of the secret and its emotional and practical impact on each of the characters that Collins has so lovingly and skillfully constructed.

"The Dead Secret", the last of the so-called apprentice novels that Collins wrote before he vaulted to fame as an acknowledged master of English literature with the publication of "The Woman in White" and "The Moonstone" is a superb example of the stereotypical Victorian sensation novel - Sarah Leeson, the timid, socially nave, weak-willed and fundamentally flawed female victim of a selfish conspiracy that revolves around the hidden details of Rosamond's birth and inheritance; as an actress, an occupation in Victorian England of suspect virtue and credibility, Mrs Treverton is subject to vicious contempt from the misanthropic Andrew Treverton, her brother-in-law, who shares rooms with the equally spiteful Shrowl; a well to do woman with a dark secret that may or may not involve a criminal act; an inheritance in question; tragedy, irony, drama, outrageous comic relief and even a ghost! What more delicious menu could the most discriminating reader of Victorian fiction hope for?

A correction to the editorial...do not include review!
By D Swaney
I just wanted to let you know that my friend Yossi Brain, the author of this book, was killed in an avalanche while climbing in Bolivia in 1999. (The latest (4th) edition of my book, the Lonely Planet guide to Bolivia, is dedicated to him.) Therefore, it's no longer accurate to say that he currently lives in La Paz, Bolivia. Perhaps, 'He lived in La Paz, Bolivia, until his death in an avalanche in 1999.'

Clear concise guide to the routes on all the likely peaks.
By A Customer
Yossi's local experience shines through in the intial advice and the route descriptions. The ranges, groups of peaks, approaches to induvidual mountains and the routes given for each peak are well laid out, clear and concise. Photgraphs are included to give an impression of the types of climbing and the setting. For the peaks and routes I have experienced the descriptions are excellent and I could have saved myself a lot of trouble if this book had been around earlier. The book is available at the same time as the infrastructure has improved to support visiting climbers so get a copy and get out there.

Beautiful!
By Ron Mader
From Planeta Journal - Before his death in 1999, the author was a professional mountain guide and adventure traveler based in La Paz. A colleague and friend wrote: "His books are the best that have been written about Bolivia's trekking and climbing in decades." In this useful book Brain provides a number of choices of where to climb, including new and lesser-known routes in the cordilleras--Real, Apolobamba, Quimsa Cruz, and Occidental.

But then Charlie’s memories of his parents suddenly begin to vanish. And suspicions arise, calling the accidental nature of their deaths into question. Charlie can’t help but doubt himself and the motives of those around him...

Doubt leads to discovery. Charlie uncovers secrets that forever change his life. And thrust him and the group of teens that he is forced to unite—fellow orphans, whose parents have met similar fates—into the center of a secret battle between good and evil…

A battle dating back to the war in Heaven. A war that only Charlie and the Orphans can end. But if they hope to stand a chance against the ultimate evil, they must first overcome their own inner demons.

Review
FROM THE EDITOR

A name like "The Orphans" conjures up a ragtag band of scrappy, solitary youngsters making their way through the world, and indeed, that's what this story contains. But the loss of our Orphans' parents is just the beginning, and young Charlie Kim's shocking loss soon spirals into a far-reaching, action-packed tale of friends and enemies, of right and wrong--and the thrill of self-discovery.

Matthew Sullivan's prose is straightforward and vivid, with plenty of comic flourishes, drawing the reader into a fantasy that still has firm roots in a world we all recognize. These ordinary teens are asked to rise to an extraordinary occasion, and Sullivan keeps us on the edge of our seats while an ages-old battle between good and evil rages on.

Readers of any age will find strength through the Orphans' strides. Along with our heroes, they will get swept up into a landscape littered with unimaginable challenges--and learn that they have far more agency than they ever realized.

Lauren Leibowitz, Editor

From the Author
My intention with The Orphans was to tell a story that bridges the gap between popular, young-adult adventure novels like The Hunger Games and Divergent and more spiritual, philosophical novels like The Alchemist... something that not only entertains, but also introduces the concepts of mindfulness, listening to your authentic self, and the power of positive thought as a means of finding true happiness. I hope that you can find as much joy reading The Orphansas I found writing it.

Teachers/Parents/All Readers, this is an EXCELLENT read!!
By Caren
Outstanding!! After teaching for 33 years, it still warms my heart to come across a new book, written for young adults, which will engage both male and female readers equally. I loved the character development, the visuals the author painted for the reader as well as the excellent plot development and twists. When reading I love to be drawn in within the first several pages and Mr. Sullivan was able to grab my full attention which, to me, translates to an excellent read! I highly recommend this book for all young adult readers but why stop there, I believe all readers will enjoy The Orphans. I have encouraged my teacher friends to read and purchase this book for their classroom libraries. I can’t wait for the second book in the Trilogy.

Page turner!
By TonyF
While admittedly not a book I would typically seek out, the Orphans delivered a great story full of witty dialogue, unexpected plot twists and an overall enjoyable story. I would recommend this book to anyone looking for a fun read that is hard to put down. It definitely leaves you wanting more, can't wait for book 2!

I highly recommend this book and would not be surprised to see ...
By Andrew Gettens
What starts off as a small and powerful story of a young teen losing his parents slowly twists into an epic fantasy with the fate of the world (and heaven and hell) at stake. Matthew Sullivan's "Orphans" is a gripping and dynamic story of loss and rebirth that works both as an entertaining YA novel and an allegorical roadmap for teens trying to find themselves in the real world.

I highly recommend this book and would not be surprised to see it on the big screen sometime soon!
