sumptuous magnificence

"Pietre dure" is the Italian word for "hardstones". It is used to describe artworks utilising semiprecious stone. A variant of this is called "comesso" where a mosaic of flat stone pieces is formed into a decorative or pictoral panel. This artform was developed and reached its peak in renaissance Florence. This catalogue of an exhibition held at the Metropolitan Museum presents 147 examples of the various permutations of this dazzling area of decorative art.

In its heyday, the finest and most elaborate examples of pietre dure were highly prized by wealthy art patrons. It was a way that kings and princes could show off their riches. These works were hugely expensive, costing far more than paintings executed by famous artists such as Titian. This fact is not surprizing, given the expense of the semiprecious stones and the time involved (sometimes up to 5 years) in its manufacture.

Many of the pieces presented in this catalogue are of sumptuous magnificence. A number of them were originally owned by Emperor Rudolf the Second and the Medici family. There are too many types of objects to detail; here is a small example of what is to be seen. Tabletops, mosaic paintings (comesso), reliquaries, a tea service, bowls, collectors cabinets, statues and vases. Particularly memorable is No 38, "Table with top depicting flowers", made of hardstones and gold. The complexity and detail of the design is akin to that seen in a fine oriental carpet. Its manufacture took around four years. What skill and patience those artisans must have possessed.

This catalogue has copious and interesting essays on pietre dure and the exhibited works are comprehensively annotated. The quality of the reproductions and printing in general is well above average. A must buy for those inerested in this fascinating area of decorative art.

It's got to be seen to be believed!

I've just returned from seeing the exhibit at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and now I can't wait to have the book. I saw the book while I was in the Met's Book Shop and it is absolutely great with so many pictures of the items on exhibit. If you can't get to the exhibit which is on thru Sept. 21st, this book is the next best thing!

Peter J. Stanlis (1919-2011) was distinguished professor of humanities emeritus at Rockford College, Rockford, Illinois. His writings have appeared in Modern Age, The Political Science Reviewer, and The Intercollegiate Review and his books include Edmund Burke: The Enlightenment and the Modern World; Robert Frost: The Individual; and Conversations with Robert Frost.

Russell Kirk (1918-1994) was the author of The Conservative Mind; Eliot and His Age; The Roots of American Order; and twenty-six other books in several fields. He was the president of two educational foundations, editor of the quarterly University Bookman, recipient of several literary awards, and visiting distinguished professor on both sides of the Atlantic.

Dr. Peter J. Stanlis has produced a gem in his: "Edmund Burke & the Natural Law." This book certainly defines Edmund Burke as the greatest political thinker of this, or any, age. The treatise is great commentary of what the politician should and must do, it is also greater for us of this day, to light our path on the thoroughfare of truth, morality, ethics, and integrity. Once you start this wonderful page-turner, you can not put it down.

What binds us to each other is greatly defined, courtesy of Dr. Stanlis, via Burke. Real human nature and the Natural Law has not changed (nor can it) since the passage of Aristotle, Cicero, and Burke. After Burke, social commentary and political theory has never again reached originality.

You must own this book. It would slide nicely in-beween "The Federalist Papers," and Cicero's, "The Republic and The Laws."

Howling Fun!

A very entertaining collection for horror fans, and worth a read for anyone that has seen The Howling or it's buzumpteen sequels. THE HOWLING is a fast paced horror novel that, in my opinion, is more entertaining than the film it was made into. The prose is sharp and the pacing is lightning fast. HOWLING 2 is a bit odd, and probably the least of the three, sticking with the Survivors of the original book being stalked by two of the main baddies from Drago. It's short, but has a lot of emphasis on running away from horror than showing actual horror. For a clearer sequel check out Howling 3, it adds to the first book explaining more of the original town and is much more expansive in setting than the other entries.

Well presented and if you like your horror to feel pulpy with a side of sexy, this is for you.

Three great werewolf tales!

Three great werewolf novels together in a trilogy set! Convenient and it's cheaper than buying the novels separately. How great is that?!! Sure, you can buy the paperbacks one at a time but this trilogy package is currently only available for the Kindle and it comes your way courtesy of the folks at Books of the Dead Press.

As for the novels themselves, they have aged well over the years and haven't lost any of their edge. They are neither too long nor too short and they tie together nicely as a trilogy but each could be considered to be a stand-alone novel.

Gary Brandner creates characters that we come to care about as they evolve while he piles on the suspense, throws in a sprinkling of humor and a pinch of sensuality and lets it all simmer before blowing the lid off in an explosive climax.

If you are into werewolf tales and don't mind stories set in the late 1970s and early 1980s, then you can't go wrong with these three fantastic tales.

Who Knew?

I'm a huge fan of the original Howling film. The others...not so much. It was on TV recently, and I noticed in the credits that it was based on the book by Gary Brandner. I had completely missed this in the countless other times I'd watched the movie! So, I hopped on Amazon to see if it was available, and discovered that it was a trilogy! Awesome!

Werewolves have always seemed to play second fiddle to vampires (and now zombies), and there just not enough stories about them.

If you're a fan of werewolves, The Howling movie(s), or just horror in general, but this trilogy. You won't be disappointed.

The American Canon Is Incomplete Without This Novel

Often compared by literary critics to Toni Morrison's 1987 Beloved, for the choices women and mothers are forced into under the most desperate of circumstances and conditions, William Styron's 1979 novel Sophie's Choice is a non-step textual tugging at the heart. In spite of the long passages replete with narrator Stingo's onanistic details (he hasn't gotten any, so the irony is, of course, that he lives in a place called the "pink palace"...hmmm...what's that a euphemism for?), this novel of a Holocaust survivor is not easily put out of one's memory. There are few books I internalize and metaphorize and carry around with me; this is one of those books. The humorous description of the McGraw/Hill publishing offices in Manhattan in the late 40s is a superbly hilarious way to open this novel. We are then introduced, at a rooming house in Brooklyn, to Sophie Z. and Nathan Landau, two of the novel's central characters. We learn that Sophie is a Catholic Pole who survived Auschwitz, but is still haunted by a "choice" she was forced to make while there. I agree with my fellow critic who states that the scene of Sophie's choice (set in the novel on April 1st, nonetheless, echoing, I would assume, Ralph Ellison's Invisible Man)is so dramatically underplayed that I had to re-read it three times to make certain I didn't miss some critical nuance. Styron's choosing to portray the scene from which the novel's title comes as quietly and near the end as possible is a stroke of literary brilliance and keeps the reader page turning without end to find the answer to the question: What was the "choice"? Of course, in the course of the novel, Sophie Z. is faced with numerous choices, but only one choice matters; no, scratch that, all her choices matter, but this one choice is the most soul destructive of all; the self she fled with will ultimately be destroyed by a Brooklyn Jew. Forget the film; it damages this beloved text like any film does. William Styron's brilliance and specificity create a novel (based on a true story--in part, from Olga Legnya's Five Chimneys, which Styron discusses in the re-released 1999 afterword) that deals not only with the Holocaust and its implications for discussion and analysis (Sophie is a Catholic Pole, after all, not a Jew) but with the more mundane factors in life--like brilliance hindered by madness and insanity. A very sharp and unforgettable reading experience. I ask you to approach it with an open heart.

Priceless!

This book is a masterpiece. Any work by William Styron is a masterpiece. He wrote the great American novel - several times over. He may not have set out to do that - but every word he wrote - every chapter read - every book devoured is a completely awesome experience for the reader. After reading this book, or any of his other books - most others will pale by comparison. Of course, if every author was a genius then this author would be status quo - but of course that is not the case. Pick up any of his works, sit right down and be prepared to be awed. And they are books you will reread because you just can't stop yourself.

I was not thrilled

I am late to this party, and now that I've been here, I'm not sorry. This book is not, in my opinion, remotely on the level of "The Confessions of Nat Turner." I expected more than the most pompous 22-year-old ever imagined and an utterly plastic title character whose almost unspeakable life experiences never even scratch, let alone dent or - G-d forbid - pierce her complete self-regard. A huge disappointment.
