Edmund Burke And The Natural Law, by Peter J. Stanlis

Today the idea of natural law as the basic ingredient in moral, legal, and political thought presents a challenge not faced for almost two hundred years. On the surface, there would appear to be little room in the contemporary world for a widespread belief in natural law. The basic philosophies of the opposition-the rationalism of the philosophes, the utilitarianism of Bentham, the materialism of Marx-appear to have made prior philosophies irrelevant. Yet these newer philosophies themselves have been overtaken by disillusionment born of confl icts between "might" and "right." Many thoughtful people who were loyal to secular belief have become dissatisfi ed with the lack of normative principles and have turned once more to natural law. This fi rst book-length study of Edmund Burke and his philosophy, originally published in 1958, explores this intellectual giant's relationship to, and belief in, the natural law.

Review

“Mr. Stanlis…surveys the vast scope of Burke’s political and social thought…with learning and insight that have already made his book quite outstanding in the field.” – Will Herberg, Modern Age

“This book must have great circulation and intention by those who love truth and desire the continuance of the United States as a free country. Natural Law was a significant part of the basis of the Constitution, but it is a neglected and forgotten subject.”– Harry Conn, author and lecturer

EDMUND BURKE & THE NATURAL LAW
By THOMAS JENSEN
Dr. Peter J. Stanlis has produced a gem in his: "Edmund Burke & the Natural Law." This book certainly defines Edmund Burke as the greatest political thinker of this, or any, age. The treatise is great commentary of what the politician should and must do, it is also greater for us of this day, to light our path on the thoroughfare of truth, morality, ethics, and integrity. Once you start this wonderful page-turner, you can not put it down.

What binds us to each other is greatly defined, courtesy of Dr. Stanlis, via Burke. Real human nature and the Natural Law has not changed (nor can it) since the passage of Aristotle, Cicero, and Burke. After Burke, social commentary and political theory has never again reached originality.

You must own this book. It would slide nicely in-beween "The Federalist Papers," and Cicero's, "The Republic and The Laws."

Overview
By Christine Welborn
Rather than an enemy of Natural Law, as most scholars believe, Burke (1729-97) was in fact one of western civilization's most eloquent and profound defenders of its morality and politics, argues Stanlis (humanities, Rockford College, Illinois). His interpretation was originally published in 1958 by the University of Michigan Press; in the context of the Cold War, it was seen as an attempt to raise Burke to the status of a conservative hero.
