Darwin's Dangerous Idea: Evolution and the Meanings of Life, by Daniel C. Dennett

In a book that is both groundbreaking and accessible, Daniel C. Dennett, whom Chet Raymo of The Boston Globe calls "one of the most provocative thinkers on the planet", focuses his unerringly logical mind on the theory of natural selection, showing how Darwin's great idea transforms and illuminates our traditional view of humanity's place in the universe. Dennett vividly describes the theory itself and then extends Darwin's vision with impeccable arguments to their often surprising conclusions, challenging the views of some of the most famous scientists of our day.

All of life as a simple algorithm
By Vincent Poirier
Darwin's idea is very very simple; it goes like this.

1-Organisms pass their characteristics on to their descendants, which are mostly but not completely identical to their parent organisms.
2-Organisms breed more descendants than can possibly survive.
3-Descendants with beneficial variations have a better chance of surviving and reproducing, however slight, than those with non-beneficial variations.
4-These slightly modified descendants are themselves organisms, so repeat from step 1. (There is no stopping condition.)

That's it. That's all there is to Natural Selection: a simple four step loop; a mindless algorithm that displays no intent, no design, no purpose, no goal, no deeper meaning. This simple algorithm has been running on Earth for four billion years to produce every living thing, and everything made by every living thing, from the oxygen atmosphere generated by plants to the skyscrapers and music created by man. Dennett writes that it is the algoritm's complete mindlessness that makes Darwin's idea so dangerous.

Dennett devotes the major portion of his book to aggressively arguing the above. He reviews how the algorithm could have "primed life's pump" eons ago and spends some time on describing evolution and biology. He argues that biology is engineering and thus reducible to algorithms. He also explains how simple algorithms can lead to computers that play brilliant chess and here he makes an important distinction: brilliant chess doesn't have to be perfect chess.

There is in fact an algorithm to play chess perfectly: examine all possible moves and discard all moves that do not lead to a win. The problem is that the number of possible moves is Vast, and the number of good moves is Vanishingly Small; there isn't enough time in the universe to use this algorithm. Therefore, software designers have developed imperfect but powerful (i.e. heuristic) algorithms that play merely excellent chess. Dennett uses this nuance to refute Godel's and Penrose's objections to Mind as being something "special", something more than the result of a Darwinian process.

Having argued that mind can evolve through a Darwinian process, he goes one step further: ethics can too. Darwin's world is amoral, without good or evil. We have invented the concepts of good and evil and Dennett ends with this. He reassures us that while a mindless, godless, amoral Darwinian process is at the root of everything, we can embrace morality, ethics, and beauty. To quote Dennett, "the world is sacred".

Good but not for the faint of heart!
By Atheen
An online friend with similar interests, Steven Haines, recommended Daniel C. Dennett's book Darwin's Dangerous Idea to me some time ago. (Last year, as I recall). So enthusiastic was/is he over it, that he actually sent me a copy! After reading the book--and it took me weeks rather than days to do it--I have to say that I have mixed feelings about it. On the one hand I definitely found it dense with information, a thorough critique of Darwinism and its modern variants, and certainly a very interesting work. On the other hand I found it very slow and difficult reading.
The book doesn't simply lay before the reader the author's observations and research on his topic like so many others. In fact Dennett himself points out this fact in his introduction when he notes that the volume is a book on science not a work of science. As he rightfully notes, "Science is not done by quoting authorities, however eloquent and eminent, and then evaluating their arguments (p. 11)." What he does do is describe the topic of Darwinian evolution and its impact on society, then presents the observations and research of diverse professionals in the field, critically dissecting them for the benefit and edification of the reader. It should be noted that Dennett is not himself an anthropologist or biologist, but he is trained in critical analysis. As Distinguished Arts and Sciences Professor at Tufts University and director of that institution's Center for Cognitive Studies, he is considered a philosopher whose specialty is consciousness as high-level, abstract thinking and is known as a leading proponent of the computational model of the mind. As such he is also considered a philosophical leader among the artificial intelligence (AI) community. His credentials, therefore, give him more than adequate qualifications for performing the above noted dissection with precision and thoroughness.
It is sometimes difficult for the average person, especially one who is not specifically trained in a field of research or in the rules of logic, to be objective about the literature in an area outside their specialty. The power of the written word, the forceful current of a persuasive argument, and the care with which confirming evidence is presented and refuting evidence suppressed or camouflaged, all make it difficult to see the flaws in some of the popular works on evolution--or any other science. Therein lies the value of Professor Dennett's efforts in DDI. He carefully points out the errors and strengths of the authors he cites. As he writes, "There is no such thing as a sound Argument from Authority, but authorities can be persuasive, sometimes rightly and sometimes wrongly. I try to sort this all out....(p. 11)." And he does so step by step so that the reader can follow the logic or illogic of the arguments under discussion. In doing so he takes on some pretty visible and popular authors, Stephen Jay Gould and Richard Dawkins among the better known perhaps, and some very high level math-physics intellects, most notably Stuart Kaufmann and Roger Penrose.
I found that the work almost seemed like a collection of essays of varying length on assorted topics with all of them linked by a common theme. The book is probably best read with this in mind, since it's difficult to digest in a single sitting or even with a single read. (I tend to use post-it-note page markers to highlight points on pages I wish to review after finishing a book. There were so many post-it-notes marking my copy of DDI, that a friend at work pointed out that I might just as well re-read the entire book. He's probably right!) Part of the problem lies in the book's basic premis. As a critique of various works by diverse authorities, it demands that the reader more actively participate in the thought process of that criticism. And that participation requires a rather diverse background of knowledge: anthropology, architecture, artificial intelligence, biology, evolutionary theory, game theory, physics, philosophy, are among some of the topics covered under the cover of Darwin and evolution! It also requires some knowledge of the author's under discussion.
While I don't want to scare a prospective reader, I also think that this book might be a little more than most can or wish to handle. I do think that the person who undertakes to read it, devoting to the project the time and care that it deserves, will come away with, not only a good deal of solid information, but with a first rate training in critical thinking as well!

A can-opener for closed minds.
By Stephen A. Haines
Recently, a poll on the most notable figure of the previous millennium placed Charles Darwin in fourth place. That's three short of the mark. No concept has been as wide-reaching and influential as the idea of evolution through natural selection. And this book should follow right behind. It is clearly the second most important book published. Dennett's approach deals with Darwin's idea in a philosophical and logical framework instead of a biological one. He declares it the 'universal acid'. Indeed, how does one contain the such a revolutionary notion of change over time? It has affected every aspect of the cosmos from astrophysics to quantum theory. Dennett points up better than anyone that if we truly wish to know what we are in the scheme of things, Darwin's idea is the place to start.
The point of this book is, of course, that Darwin's concept hasn't been universally accepted. Even those who acknowledge evolution may still contest Darwin's mechanism of natural selection through adaptation. Dennett's analysis of iconoclast Stephen Gould's 'punctuated equilibrium' is delightfully scathing, but precisely on the mark. The role of the heretic is to threaten orthodoxy, whether or not the orthodoxy is false. Gould, after trying for a generation to scupper orthodox Darwinism, is here demonstrated to have failed miserably. His attacks, however, have frightened the orthodox without weakening the structure of natural selection. Dennett's superb critique of "punctuated equilibrium" isn't a call for blind adherence to orthodoxy, but instead demonstrates the strengths of Darwin's analysis and why Gould's iconoclasm is misleading. Gould's response to Dennett's clear review of the reality of Darwinism has been petulant stubbornness rather than sound scholarship. That's a pity.
Dennett's prose is delightful. His analysis is direct and pointed in arriving at his conclusions. Taking you step by step through his presentations, it becomes unequivocally clear that his conclusions are iron-clad. Nothing is left hanging - you are brought to each point with a clarity any writer would envy. The book isn't brief, but as Mozart once responded to the criticism that there were 'too many notes' in his opera, what would you take out? Dennett builds his case with confidence, using numerous sources to support his contentions. Coupling a high degree of readability with an equally elevated scholarship is no mean feat, but Dennett achieves it with apparent ease. For contrast, try Michael Ruse's "Understanding Darwin", another philosophical view of the impact of Darwin's idea.
If there's a better book somewhere on the impact of the greatest concept in science, please point it out. Dennett's analysis shows how widely Darwin's idea of evolution through natural selection has permeated through all the sciences and society. The resistance to the concept remains high in the United States, the only facet Dennett is unable to address. He's not alone in that, but with the rise of Richard Dawkins' thesis of the 'meme' perhaps we may soon have an answer.

Great Manual for beginners and advanced reloaders
By AT TAJIR
I got this manual as part of an RCBS Rock Chucker Master Reloading kit. The manual is greatly detailed with nice pictures, making it easy to understand for someone who is starting reloading for the first time. It took me about 1-2 hours to read through the first few pages of the manual, while I had the RCBS press and other components laid out in front of me, and I kept referring back and forth. With the easy instructions from this manual, I was reloading my .308 shells within an hour or two. The reloading methodology is pretty much the same since the last two decades and this manual works with even the current RCBS products, since they haven't changed much either.

I would highly recommend this manual to someone who is starting into the hand reloading hobby, as this manual is super easy to understand and follow. You will be reloading in no time at all.. Have fun, reloading!!

The Conjure Woman and Other Conjure Tales, by Charles W. Chesnutt

The stories in The Conjure Woman were Charles W. Chesnutt's first great literary success, and since their initial publication in 1899 they have come to be seen as some of the most remarkable works of African American literature from the Emancipation through the Harlem Renaissance. Lesser known, though, is that the The Conjure Woman, as first published by Houghton Mifflin, was not wholly Chesnutt's creation but a work shaped and selected by his editors. This edition reassembles for the first time all of Chesnutt's work in the conjure tale genre, the entire imaginative feat of which the published Conjure Woman forms a part. It allows the reader to see how the original volume was created, how an African American author negotiated with the tastes of the dominant literary culture of the late nineteenth century, and how that culture both promoted and delimited his work.
In the tradition of Uncle Remus, the conjure tale listens in on a poor black southerner, speaking strong dialect, as he recounts a local incident to a transplanted northerner for the northerner's enlightenment and edification. But in Chesnutt's hands the tradition is transformed. No longer a reactionary flight of nostalgia for the antebellum South, the stories in this book celebrate and at the same time question the folk culture they so pungently portray, and ultimately convey the pleasures and anxieties of a world in transition. Written in the late nineteenth century, a time of enormous growth and change for a country only recently reunited in peace, these stories act as the uneasy meeting ground for the culture of northern capitalism, professionalism, and Christianity and the underdeveloped southern economy, a kind of colonial Third World whose power is manifest in life charms, magic spells, and ha'nts, all embodied by the ruling figure of the conjure woman.
Humorous, heart-breaking, lyrical, and wise, these stories make clear why the fiction of Charles W. Chesnutt has continued to captivate audiences for a century.

Review
"Finally, we have Charles W. Chesnutt's conjure woman stories as he wrote them, not as Houghton Mifflin edited them. This collection is a landmark in American literary publishing for it helps us to understand the pressures exerted upon all authors and especially on African American writers. More important, these wonderful stories are now available to a new generation of readers."—Cathy N. Davidson

"The publication of the conjure tales of Chesnutt constituted a crucial development in the history of African American [literature]. Yet up to now no one has attempted to do what Brodhead has done--namely, collect all the stories in this vein and publish them with an introduction that explains their import individually, serially, and as a collection. . . . His introduction augments the best scholarship that's been done on Chesnutt with his own broad expertise in the history of American fiction and his acute readings of individual Chesnutt tales."—William L. Andrews, University of Kansas

About the Author
Charles Waddell Chesnutt (1858–1932) was an American author, essayist, political activist and lawyer, best known for his novels and short stories exploring complex issues of racial and social identity in the post-Civil War South, where the legacy of slavery and interracial relations had resulted in many free people of color who had attained education before the war, as well as slaves and freedmen of mixed race. Two of his books were adapted as silent films in 1926 and 1927 by the director and producer Oscar Micheaux. Chesnutt also established what became a highly successful legal stenography business that provided his main income.

A wonderful story and an important work of literature
By Kristen Beck
Charles Chestnutt's A Conjure Woman is a collection of short stories told by a former slave named Julius to a White couple who have recently moved to the South. Written at the turn of the century, Chestnutt was addressing a primarily White audience who were recovering from Reconstruction and were fond of plantation-style literature which looked upon slavery with nostalgia. On the surface, the author seems to be catering to the nostalgic pre-Civil War idea, but in actuality, Julius' stories have a much deeper moral which reveal a harsh and terrible way of life for Blacks of the time. Mixed with elements of magic and conjuring, Julius' seems to be telling fanciful fairy tales, but with a closer look, one realizes that Chestnutt has no fondness or nostalgia for the times of slavery. This is a well-written and thought-provoking book and it is an important novel of America's history.

A must for anyone interested in African American Literature
By dandeliondreamer
What is most interesting about these stories is both the narrative framework & the way the narrator of the stories about the black community (there are essentially two narrators) uses magic ("The Goophered Grapevine" and "Po' Sandy" especially) to usurp the authority of the white landowner (the primary narrator, who is re-telling the stories Julius has told him). Maybe it takes an understanding of African American literary traditions-- signifying, call & response, etc, to really dig in, but you can still relate without that background.
There are multiple layers of narration going on-- and once you can get through those layers, you can both enjoy the story-line and understand something pivotal about the way the African American genre works. The dialect and speech patterns are represented in a way that was criticized by some early African American writers who wanted a more "realistic" "naturalistic" and political structure. But underneath the "quaint" nature of the stories about magic & the slave/master relationship are some very subtle and very powerful images of how the slave and master influence *each other*-- that there are differences in the power dynamic than what we expect. It might be hard to get into the language-- but once you do, it's not overdone. Read the dialect the way you would learn another language; it's English, with a twist. There is also a great story on "passing," and some exploration of voodoo. This is a text that should be taught alongside Faulkner & Flannery O'Connor-- another look at the South.

"General Books LLC" is a Misleading Scam, not a proper publisher.
By M. Richardson
N.B.: The 1-star applies to this edition, not to "The Conjure Woman," which is one of the best books to have emerged from the 1890s. And if I could give 0 stars to General Books LLC editions, or negative stars, I would.

Buyer beware: All "books" published by General Books LLC are not really "books" at all. They are automatically (and very badly) produced via OCR software from digital scans of old public domain editions. On nearly every page you will find egregious, ridiculous misprints, and flat-out gibberish, with the result that the "book" is unreadable. (That's why when you click the "Look Inside" feature above, you'll actually be redirected to a "real" edition of the book. General Books LLC doesn't want you to see their product until you buy it, because they know that if you see it, you won't buy it.) In fact, as General Books LLC all but admits, the things they sell here on Amazon are actually marketing devices designed to induce the unwary to subscribe to a service they do not need. Charging [...] for this thing is a scandal.

Read closely the disclaimer that General Books LLC adds to the page for this so-called edition: "The book has no illustrations or index. Purchasers are entitled to a free trial membership in the General Books Club where they can select from more than a million books without charge. Subjects: African Americans; Southern States; American fiction/ Afro-American authors; Short stories; African Americans Southern States Fiction; Fiction / Literary; Fiction / General; Literary Criticism / American / General; Social Science / Ethnic Studies / African American Studies; Fiction / Action."

"Without charge" is misleading, to put it mildly. Open the front cover of a book produced by General Books LLC and you will find yet another disclaimer: "Could you please forgive any spelling mistakes, missing or extraneous characters...?" Then you are directed to the company's web-site, which asks for your credit card or PayPal information to begin, at the rate of [...] per month, a "subscription" to books that are freely available in the public domain. Which means you can get them for free at web-sites like Project Gutenberg, the Internet Archive, and Google Books.

For example, drop this URL into your browser and you will be taken to a freely downloadable copy of the first edition of "The Conjure Woman" (1899):

[...]

Incidentally, I know all this because my university accidentally ordered this ridiculous product instead of the scholarly edition I had specified for use in my classes (I am a professor of American literature).

Amazon, in my opinion, should not allow companies like this one to sell their products.

Review

Wong’s Essentials of Pediatric Nursing continues to be a core text book that every children’s nursing student should have at their finger tipsto compliment lecture notes and to assist them to integrate theory and practice. Each chapter has ‘nursing alerts’ and criticalthinking exercises... It holds relevance for all children’s nurses and the usefulness of Wong’s Essentials of Pediatric Nursing continues long after completion of a programme in children’s nursing as a reference guide." outdated
By Amber
This was a "required" book for nursing school. I am now in my final quarter and have had assigned readings from this book only a handful of times (it was mostly required as a reference for our paper we had to write on palliative/hospice care of dying children). Every time I read the chapters from this book in preparation for lecture, my instructor says something that contradicts what the reading says. When I say "But Wong's says ___," she informs that the info from that book is outdated. I really wonder why we even have assigned readings from this atrocious book.
In conclusion, this book is full of errors and you are better off going to the AAP for more up to date information about peds.

Good if you have a PhD and are fluent in medical terminology and Latin. Bad if you're a nursing student.
By Cara
I'm not happy with this book at all. Although it is very detailed, it's almost detailed to a fault. They introduce acronyms without even specifying what they stand for or what they mean! Although the information is very dense, it has an underlying expectation of extremely well-versed medical jargon and background knowledge.

I find myself looking up dozens of terms each chapter. The book does have some great collections of clinical signs and symptoms, which I do appreciate. However, each page is so poorly thought out and doesn't flow in a way that makes it easily comprehensible. Hate it, and I want to burn it..if only I didn't rent it, and if only I didn't need it for my class.

Book is great for its info-had to do a lot of additional resource studying-I PASSED!
By Evie Evie
This book was required for my PEDs class. It is very detailed, specific, and has lots of writing, charts, etc. If you're familiar with nursing books, you will recognize 'Lippincott's' writing style and understand what I mean. There is a lot of information in this book, but I still had to do some additional research & resources to clarify some things and get better visuals. I PASSED the class, but I don't think it was because of this book, necessarily. The book on its own is an excellent book, but, PEDs is a challenging nursing concept and you just have to stay on track.

Jesus Is Here, by Charles M. Sheldon

What if Jesus suddenly appeared on the streets of your own city? This is the premise of Jesus Is Here, Charles M. Sheldon's sequel to his classic novel In His Steps, the book that introduced the slogan, "What Would Jesus Do?"

Years ago, members of the First Church of Raymond pledged to consider "What would Jesus do?" before taking any action, however large or small. Now, the Reverend Henry Maxwell and his congregation find themselves delving even deeper into the Christian life--by experiencing the very presence of Jesus in their midst. Jesus Is Here is a challenging, thought-provoking story, a reminder that the story of Jesus did not end on a cross two millennia ago but continues today. Join the church members of Raymond as they learn that Jesus is alive, here and now.

About the Author
Charles M. Sheldon was a pastor in 1896 when he chose to preach one Sunday night on the question "What would Jesus do?" A sermon became a series, that became an article, that became a book, that became a movement. And the book has sold over 30 million copies.

If You Liked In His Steps, This Will Massively Disappoint You
By D. E. Dickerson
While it's billed as a "sequel" to the classic In His Steps, this book contains all the same characters and almost nothing else. On top of which it is practically unreadable.

Short version: Jesus returns to earth and starts walking around being a perfect example of holiness. Precisely because of Sheldon's devoutness, Jesus is scarcely a character at all: we never hear a single word he says, and everything he does is reported to us secondhand by someone else. ("Charles! You missed it! Jesus just gave the most amazing sermon about world peace!"--that sort of thing.) So whereas in the original novel, the characters in the town of Raymond each had individual challenges to face and choices to make, here they simply comment to each other on the latest thing Jesus is doing. And what's really odd is that Jesus doesn't even do very much: no healings, no miracles, and as I just pointed out, although he preaches, you never hear what he actually says. By the time he meets the President and then vanishes, you realize that nothing has even happened. There's no plot, no tension, and it actually violates everything people liked about the first book. (What if you had a "sequel" to The Godfather where all the gangsters simply talked to each other while a giant monster walked around Chicago doing non-gangster-related things? It feels just like that.)

If you want a decent sequel to In His Steps, you have options: What Would Jesus Do? by Glenn Clark (1950) (which is also set in Raymond and uses the grandchildren of the original characters), In His Steps Today by Marti Hefley (1976), and--probably the most likely to appeal to the average evangelical today--In His Steps Again by David Heeren (2010). But avoid, avoid, avoid this bafflingly tedious book. I can only recommend it to obsessive completists like myself. I'm afraid it contains no actual reading pleasure, and even sullies the joy of the original.

could use a re-write
By spfdgreg
This novel, while not terrible, has some real problems. First is theological. When Jesus returns, He won't be slipping in unannounced as an ordinary person, He will come very visibly, and as the sovereign Judge of the world. Second, Sheldon's Jesus seems to be concerned with only two issues--eucumenism, and prohibition of alcohol [He is also said to have given a sermon denouncing Wall Street, but exactly what He said about it we are never told]. Since churches, even back then, didn't even preach the same gospel, how can they all be expected to unite into one big church? Sheldon's Jesus never says anything negative about the church, in contrast to the Jesus of Revelation 2-3, who had some serious complaints about those churches! Speaking of the Gospel, nowhere in this book is there a real presentation of the Gospel. Another thing which bothered me was that everyone referred to Him as "Jesus", never as He ought to be called/addressed--"Lord".

As pointed out in another review, this work also has real problems as a novel. The plot is lame, certain elements are never explained (ie, the astronomical phenomena at the start, and the inability of anyone to take a photograph of Jesus), and the characters are poorly developed; we are told that they change, but seldom shown how and why they change. They are like line drawings, not full-color, 3-D portraits.

This novel is an example of what happens when non-novelists try to write novels.

Superb Overview of Bird Biology and Species Occurring Worldwide
By Juscz
Produced in collaboration with Audubon, "Bird: The Definitive Visual Guide" (2007 by DK Publishing) deserves the highest praise for its superb presentation of birds worldwide. Containing a wide variety of representative species, excellent photographs, and a CD featuring some 60 bird songs from around the globe, this is perhaps the best general survey book available on the Class Aves.

The book consists of three chapters and the bird song CD. Whereas chapters two (nonpasserines) and three (passerines) provide basic and interesting information on the biology and geographic occurrence of selected birds representing specific bird orders and/or families, the first chapter touches on more general topics such as form, function, behavior, conservation, extinction, habitats, and ecology.

The Foreword consists of a brief, one page philosophical reflection on the significance of birds in our lives and is followed by 14 full-page images of such species as the African jacana, the European bee-eater, and the great grey owl. As is the case throughout the book, all of these images are in full color and of very high quality.

The Introduction begins with an examination of bird anatomy and physiology. Those individuals less familiar with these topics will find the explanations to be very clear and accessible. At the same time, the specialist will likely appreciate being reminded of how these topics can be distilled to a rather simplified yet informative presentation. For example, in its brief description of respiration, the text states,

"When a mammal breathes, air flows into its lungs and back out again. Bird lungs work differently: air flows straight through the lungs, via a system of air sacs, before being exhaled. This one-way flow allows air and blood to move in opposite directions, known as countercurrent."

The accompanying diagrams very effectively explain how a bird's lungs function in this manner. The reader will continue to encounter similar, high quality explanations throughout the text.

A representative bird skeleton enables us to understand how this structure keeps a bird's weight to a minimum while simultaneously standing up to the rigors imposed by powerful flight muscles. In addition, the explanation of flight forces, speeds, and patterns (pages 32 and 33) is also informative yet concise.

The introduction goes on to clearly describe general avian characteristics such as feather structure, wing structure, gliding and soaring, legs and feet, bills, mechanisms of feeding, communication, defense, breeding, nests and eggs, parental care, living together, migration, threats, conservation, and extinction. Again, one has to admire the manner in which these topics are effectively explained (excellent text and diagrams/photographs) such that the amateur bird enthusiast, perhaps lacking much in the way of formal biological training, can rapidly be brought "up to speed" on the essentials. But, again, professional biologists should also find the explanations very useful as well.

Chapter 1 continues with an examination of bird habitats (28 pages in all being used to cover this topic). A sound explanation of the 8 different recognized biogeographical realms is a notable feature. The significance of continental drift is also considered with respect to the worldwide distribution of ratites (i.e., birds such as ostriches, emus, and rheas). Curious asides such as this abound and add to our fascination for the Class Aves.

Chapter 2 begins with a general overview of nonpasserine bird species and the criteria used for their classification. We then launch into the various orders and families comprising this very broad Avian group. For example, early in this chapter the two species of kiwis are shown side by side. Their geographic ranges are each indicated with a useful accompanying map (these are used throughout the book for each species presented). Important information, such as size, weight, migratory status, nesting, behavior, and species status (e.g., threatened or endangered), are presented as well. Did you know that kiwis are monogamous and, despite their harmless appearance, are perfectly capable of inflicting serious wounds to rivals? Very interesting, indeed.

The parrots (a personal favorite group of mine) consist of some 350 or so species and there is no practical way by which a book of this sort can begin to cover every species. Thus, as in all such cases throughout the work, the authors/editors opt to present some of the most representative species (such as African greys [curiously spelled "grays," rather than the traditional British "grey" spelling], blue and gold macaws, budgerigars, and monk parakeets) while also emphasizing some more unusual species with which the average person might be unfamiliar. In this latter category, the New Zealand Kakapo, a ground dweller and the heaviest parrot in the world, is given a deservedly generous presentation. It is noted how this unique species is being brought back from the brink of extinction through very special protective measures. This and similar such success stories add to our desire to continue bird conservation.

Chapter two provides informative introductions to cuckoos, owls, kingfishers, woodpeckers, toucans, hawks/eagles/falcons, and other such nonpasserines. Very good species representatives are included for each group (though I must confess I did miss seeing the black-and-white-casqued hornbill in the hornbill portion of this chapter... but the authors/editors had to draw the line somewhere).

Chapter three deals with the passerines. After a general introduction (including topics such as anatomy, plumage, bills, nesting/parenting, songs, courtship, and socialization), the species within the Order are examined. Thus we meet the thrushes, wrens, warblers, orioles, flycathchers, ovenbirds, etc., all divided amongst two suborders, the Suboscines and Oscines. While the treatment of passerines is, again, excellent and on-par with the rest of the book, I found the sunbirds section to be especially intriguing. Occurring in parts of Asia and Africa, this group appears to fill the niche that in the New World is occupied by the hummingbirds.

This is not the sort of book one would want to take into the field. It is much too large and heavy for that and it generally does not contain enough species representatives of particular Orders and/or Families to be consistently useful in the manner of a species identification manual. It is rather an excellent general reference manual.

In addition, it should be said that the pages can look a bit crammed with information, both photographic and written. I see this as an asset as it seems there are always at least a few new and interesting avian topics to discover whenever one opens this book.

For those seeking a broad overview of bird biology and an excellent presentation of many of the most representative species (with excellent photographs/illustrations and textual information throughout), look no further. This volume easily earns a five star rating.

Love ALL of My DK Books!
By C. L. Wms
The books that DK (Dorling Kindersley) publishes are always marvelous feasts for the eye. They're the sort of volumes that my little town's library never allowed anyone to check out when I was growing up. Large, heavy, high-quality books filled with pictures could only be read by the patrons while in the library! So as a middle-aged adult I find it a special treat to actually be able to own such books. And they would make great "coffee table" volumes, if you don't have a cat who damages them like my cat does when they're left lying out! Otherwise I recommend leaving them out to be handy for browsing through the beautiful pictures and reading bits here and there whenever you have a little time, and the books will fascinate children, as well. As for this particular title, 'BIRD: The Definitive Visual Guide' is not a birding guidebook, nor is it a comprehensive, in-depth study of one species or of one country's birds. Rather, it's a broad overview of birds in general, with many, many examples and fine photos, plus more information. Each and every page is jam-packed and in color. How could anyone fail to love this book if he or she has any appreciation at all for birds? Oh, and it bears the name Audubon, too, so that's another indicator of an excellent book about birds.

Fantastic Illustrated Guide to Birds
By Katherine Chan
I got this book for my 4 year old daughter who is going through a big "bird phase" in her life. All types of birds seem to fascinate her, and seeing an educational opportunity, we got this book for her for Christmas. This was a great book to get her. The photographs are stunning, the information is sound, and with a poster and a clip art CD included, there's a lot of reasons for her to go through this book over and over again.

Because this book is geared towards older children, the information given is very detailed - something both my kids love. They are learning so many random facts about birds, and really enjoy the intricacies about birds that you simply couldn't get from just watching a tv program about them or through observation alone. The kids were particularly interested in the bone and muscle structure of birds - they really are amazing creatures.

For any bird lover in your life, this book would be a great gift. Highly recommended!
