Currently he is working as head of IT for a group of companies. His core areas of interest include web-based development technologies, business intelligence, and databases. I recommended this book to a couple of clients who wanted to learn APEX. I generally recommend to also start with Beginning Oracle Application Express 5 as it explains quite well how APEX hangs together. Follow with this book as it takes you through building a nice complete application which represents a real world scenario with dumbing it down or making it too complex. It will give you a great foundation to build your APEX skills upon.

Not A Bad Voyage

Pennie Mae Cartawick did a pretty good job in writing a Sherlock Holmes short story. In this story, Sherlock and Watson are sailing to India for vacation when they stumble upon a murder on the cruise liner. Since it is a very short story, there is not enough time to build up suspense or confuse the reader on who committed the crime. Therefore, I feel this book will appeal more to a younger audience. But since I am still young at heart, I really enjoyed it.

A Twist Ending

It seems that Sherlock Holmes and Watson can’t even get away from murder when on vacation. On board a ship on the way to India three bodies are found, one after another. In this book we see Holmes and his legendary deductions at work. The reader tries to keep up with Homes and solve the crime with him. I found this a clever short story with a surprise twist at the end.

A must read for Sherlock Holmes fans. The author of this short story has remained true to the original literary Holmes and style of writing, while breathing fresh life into the character with new adventures. Three murders on board ship - but one doesn't make sense. Could a turtle be the murderer?

Barker has wisely identified many aspects of laboratory work not usually covered by "conventional" manuals, making her book one of the rarest sources for vital information required for any successful scientist. Overall, the volume is superbly written, and reading is made pleasurable by multiple hilarious remarks from the author. It is highly recommended for anyone working in research -- from undergraduate students to primary investigators, either in academy or industry. In my opinion, this is a "must have" volume for any laboratory.

About the Author

Kathy Barker received her B.A. in Biology and English, and her M.A. and Ph.D. in Microbiology, from various branches of the University of Massachusetts. She did her postdoctoral work in the laboratory of Viral Oncology at Rockefeller University and was an Assistant Professor in the Laboratory of Cell Physiology and Immunology at Rockefeller University. She is now based in Seattle, where she writes and gives workshops on various aspects of running a lab.

indispensable lab resource

This is a wonderful resource for any lab that has rotating personnel. Often, experienced researchers don't have the time or interest to orient new people but it's all here, and I would be surprised if even an experienced scientist could read through this whole manual without finding useful information.

The author uses common sense and a casual style, and assumes that the reader knows nothing. Early chapters explore BASIC basics, like getting along with colleagues, getting started the first week, questions to ask, and safety procedures; lab setup and equipment; and organization. Later chapters discuss designing and setting up experiments, using a lab notebook, presenting data, making reagents, including storage and disposal, and working in a sterile environment. Final chapters detail work with eukaryotic cell cultures, bacteria, dna/rna/protein, radioactivity, centrifugation, electrophoresis and a light microscope. Along the way, the reader will learn how to format a journal article, work in a hood, or stay in touch with the PI. The only thing missing is library research, but since this is a bench guide that seems a forgivable omission.

Spiral bound and formatted for easy access and understandability, the volume concludes with a glossary and a good index. Black and white line drawings and pictures identify items found in labs and illustrate techniques from pipetting to making entries in a notebook.

This is not a textbook written by someone who's never worked in a laboratory; it is a sensible, intelligent guide -- the dream tour you'd like to have each of your technicians or students given if you only had the time! Also handy if a person is having problems and you want to refer them to written material. Any working lab could benefit from the addition of this volume. Fabulous.

A great book, but I'd probably rec the newer version

I bought the old version because it was cheaper. It's a great reference for those just starting to work in a research laboratory. If you just want a primer, the old version is enough. But the old version is clearly the 'old version,' and hasn't been updated for the digital lab.

Great reference, though, all around. If you can afford the new version, go for it, but it not, the old version will give you 95% of what you need to know about working in a lab.

Rough Country

This collection of western stories has a broad appeal even for the reader whomight not normally decide to read this type of story. Each story is well-crafted. Each writer has carefully recreated the old West in such as way that the reader is drawn not only into the story, but into the time period as well. I was very happy with my purchase, and look forward to other works by these authors.

Jackson, Johnny Boggs, and Dusty Richards, so knew I'd enjoy this compilation of Western short stories; those men have enough writing awards between them to fill a VW. After reading the other stories that Cogburn put together here, I'm sure there are many other awards either in hand or coming to these fine writers. Buy it; you won't be disappointed. There's something here for everyone, young or old, male or female.

I can attest that this book offers a valuable corrective to the macro-analyses that so dominate the tourism literature. Dr. Cole’s micro-level longitudinal study is not only sensitively-written, but extremely astute. It resonates with so many themes I observed during my own fieldwork on tourism and cultural transformations in Toraja, Indonesia. I can envision it will become a much used ethnography of tourism in courses on the anthropology of tourism, as well as in tourism management training sessions. Southeast Asianists will also find it of value as a course text for their classes. The beauty of the book is not only its intelligence, but its wonderful accessibility to general readers.

About the Author
After studying social anthropology and extensive travel in Indonesia, Stroma Cole started her own tour operating business. For six years she led small groups all over the Indonesian archipelago. Following a period of consultancy with UNESCO and ADB she returned to the UK and took up her post at Buckinghamshire Chilterns University College. Stroma continued to visit the remote Ngadha villages on the island of Flores to study the effects of tourism. She completed her PhD in 2003 and has published extensively. She continues to research tourism in Indonesia and other less economically developed countries. She is chair of Tourism Concern.

Irritating and disappointing.

I think this book has a very, very specific audience--an audience that doesn't have an even basic understanding of what constitutes a healthy diet, and an audience that is younger and perhaps dealing with self-esteem issues manifested in unhealthy eating habits.

In Part 1, "Rethink Beauty," Hart wastes a lot of time (about 40 pages) explaining why her book is so important, why it will change your life. The gist of her message is, "I will help you eat healthy foods, and then you will feel incredible!" This section gives a pretty standard introduction to carbs, fats, proteins, and vitamins. It's basic information that most of us know or have read about before.

The second section of this book is the longest. In it, Hart gives advice for what healthy habits to focus on and which foods to eat during each of the four seasons. So, for example, during spring, her advice is to fill up on cleansing fluids (i.e., drink water), plant a garden, lighten up your liver (i.e., drink lemon water), simplify supper (i.e., steam your food), and reduce toxins (i.e., don't eat processed foods). Then she lists a "beauty basket" of foods for the season (e.g., artichoke, asparagus, dandelion greens, sprouts, etc.), and gives recipes that include those foods.

I found the third section to be the most useful and practical. Ironically, it is also the shortest. While not completely absent of dud advice (e.g., be sure to chew each bite of your food 20-30 times!), Hart at least covers some more relevant and interesting topics like food pairing, massage, and fermented foods.

There were a couple of things about this book that irritated me. First, I hated how Hart kept using the word "un-pretty." Eating a lot of sugar is so "un-pretty." Or sometimes we just have "un-pretty" days when we just want to eat greasy pizza. Every time I read that word, it felt like judgment. It made me think of an overbearing mother who tells her slightly uncouth, boisterous daughter to "be sweet" or "be nice." I get what Hart was going for with the whole "eat good to look good" theme, but why does "pretty" have to be the name we give that lifestyle choice?

I also thought Hart talked about food in an unrealistic way. While I agree that healthy, organic food is much better for my body and for the environment, let's just talk about food in a real way, you know? Eating a sweet potato is not going to make me feel "incredible." And steaming some asparagus for "supper" (my God, who says that anymore?) is not going to change my life. At one point Hart says that after you taste how good real food is, you will rethink the way you define "treats." Instead of treating yourself to sweets, you will want to treat yourself to an expensive fillet of wild salmon or a "basket brimming with organic produce." Seriously? No one who wants a piece of cheesecake is going to suddenly change her mind and instead want a "basket brimming with organic produce." Just don't say stupid things like that.

Unfortunately, I think Hart's unrealistic ideas about food are present in the entire book. Truth be told, I'm not so sure her romanticized perspective on organic produce is much different from other diet crazes or food fads: it's still a part of the unhelpful belief that food, whether it be a fatty cheeseburger or a bowl of organic dandelion greens, has the power to change EVERYthing, to solve all of your problems, to make life AMAZING. In reality, though, food is just food. Yes, sugar makes you feel crappy; spinach doesn't. But neither one is an emotional panacea. Don't ask of food what it isn't meant to give.

Ultimately, I thought this book was disappointing, and I really wouldn't recommend it. I think Feed Your Face: Younger, Smoother Skin and a Beautiful Body in 28 Delicious Days, The Beauty Detox Solution: Eat Your Way to Radiant Skin, Renewed Energy and the Body You've Always Wanted, and The Beauty Detox Foods: Discover the Top 50 Beauty Foods That Will Transform Your Body and Reveal a More Beautiful You address the same subject in a better way.

Just buy it. Nothing but good advice here.

I LOVE this book. Don't let other reviews deter you. I'm an esthetician and holistic nutrition coach, and I have to say, this book is clear, concise, and covers all the basics (and then some). It's an easy, fun read, and incredibly well summarized to pack a lot of information into a fairly small book. I still turn to this when I need a quick reference. Buy it!! This really is how you create beautiful skin for life.
